Building a high quality monitoring system for restoration along the Great Green Wall in Senegal

Project Summary :

The research project on the Great Green Wall in Senegal addresses the urgent issue of land restoration, a critical priority due to the increase in climate change-related natural disasters such as wildfires, droughts, and floods. The benefits of land restoration efforts are manifold, including improved food production, water conservation, income generation for local populations, and carbon sequestration, thus contributing to the fight against global warming. Success in these initiatives requires close collaboration among farmers, rural communities, businesses, and government agencies, each with their objectives. It is crucial to define common goals and regularly monitor progress to facilitate this collaboration and enhance the effectiveness of implementation. However, a major challenge is the absence of a standardized framework for monitoring that incorporates spatio-temporal data on key restoration indicators such as vegetation cover, soil organic carbon, and biodiversity.

To address this challenge, the project aims to develop a spatio-temporal monitoring framework for restoration indicators at Great Green Wall sites in Senegal. This framework is intended to assist local stakeholders in tracking the effectiveness of restoration efforts and identifying areas where additional intervention is needed. It will be designed in collaboration with local stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs, and local communities, to ensure it meets their needs and priorities. Before starting the project, it is essential to understand the need for restoration, define the objectives, identify the types of land use and the impacts of restoration, and recognize sustainability barriers. The project will rely on a capitalization study and an analysis of existing knowledge to identify indicators and measurement units that will guide progress towards restoration goals. Drawing on the guide from the World Resource Institute, the project will develop a methodology to define objectives, priorities, and indicators before implementation, highlighting the importance of indicators in assessing progress and making informed decisions for environmental governance.
